Meninx of the Brain

In our body's central nervous system surrounding the brain and spinal cord, the Meninges are a triple layered membrane system consisting of thin protective membranous coverings of connective tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord, within the dorsal cavity it suspends the brain within the skull (cranium) preventing the brain from pressing against the skull's inner surface.

Meninges

In our body's head and the spinal cord, the Meninges is a laminated, or layered, structure that covers and protects the brain and the spinal cord. The outermost layer is the fibrous membrane dura mater, the middle layer, arachnoid (arachnoid mater) secures the dura to the innermost layer, the pia mater.

Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

In our body, the Meninges, as a membrane system, lines the insides of the bones protecting both the brain and spinal cord from physical impact, with a protective padding and containment of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in which the central nervous system floats.

Dura Mater (Pachymeninx)

Dura Mater: In our body's head and the spinal cord, the Dura Mater (Pachymeninx), found on the outermost layer of the three meninges is a strong, thick fibrous membrane of connective tissue, that as a sac envelops the leptomeninges layers, covering the brain and the spinal cord, which help stabilize the CNS within the skull (cranium) and the spinal column.

Arachnoid Mater: In our body's head and the spinal cord, Arachnoid (Arachnoid Mater) is a delicate membrane enveloping the brain and spinal cord.

In our body's head, Arachnoid (Arachnoid Mater) lies between the pia mater and the fibrous membrane dura mater, separated from the pia mater by the subarachnoid cavity which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

Pia Mater: In our body's head and the spinal cord, Pia Mater is the inside layer of the delicate membrane meninges, that clings to the contours of the brain, distributing the forces that suspend the brain within the skull (cranium).

In our body's head and the spinal cord, Pia Mater is a fine vascular membrane that lies under the arachnoid (arachnoid mater) and the dura mater covering the brain and spinal cord.
